This past week, I spoke to the 2016 Graduating Class of Florida REALTORS Leadership Academy. They are an amazing group of REALTORS, all looking to develop their leadership potential.
They had many questions about leadership but the one that struck a chord with me was a question on professionalism. They were very concerned about the professionalism of the REALTORS in our state. As a REALTOR that sells real estate every day, that is one of my biggest concerns. Is professionalism being courteous and respectful to customers and other REALTORS or, and I believe this is the crux of the problem, is it knowledge of the license laws, the industry and conducting a transaction?
Part of the problem that exists today is when a Broker hires on a new agent, they take no time to educate them on office policy, contracts, liability etc. I truly believe that a REALTOR that is not trained in all of the above is a walking lawsuit, a truly credible liability for their Broker and for other REALTORS that they interact with.
So my fellow REALTORS, if you are a Broker with agents, please make sure they are trained…if not, you could lose your license along with your agent. When I deal with an educated REALTOR, the entire transaction is a pleasure for me and my customer. But when I deal with someone that knows little to nothing, it is truly a nightmare.
