I believe that we, as members of the Florida REALTORS, CAN make a difference. We can do so in how we conduct ourselves as REALTORS. How we conduct our lives as parents: as fathers and mothers. We can make a difference in how we conduct ourselves as both friends and citizens of this country.
Consider this from our history: 56 Revolutionaries: 5 were captured by their enemies as traitors, 12 had their homes ransacked and burned, 2 lost their sons to the enemy, another had 2 sons captured, 9 of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships.
Who Were They? 25 were lawyers or jurists, 11 were merchants, 9 were farmers or plantation owners. They were men of means and education, yet they did what they did, knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton was a wealthy planter and trader, one by one his ships were captured by the enemy. He was forced to sell his plantation and mortgage his properties to pay his mounting debts. His remaining estate was finally seized. The enemy looted the properties of Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Walton, Gwinett, Heyward, Ruttledge and Middleton. Francis Lewis also had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife and she died within a few months. At the Battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr. saw the enemy, British General Cornwallis, had taken the family home for his headquarters. Nelson told Gen. George Washington to open fire on his own home. Washington did, the home was destroyed and Nelson later died bankrupt.
These men were not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were, more often than not, soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but valued liberty more. These courageous men pledged their lives, their fortunes, their families and their sacred honor to the cause of freedom when they signed the Declaration of Independence. They clearly made a difference. They sacrificed much for the rest of us. We have a legacy we have built upon in this country. These people made it possible so that we can have choices.
We have a choice at the Board of Directors meeting next week.
Look at each position. Consider the qualifications.
We CAN make a difference.
Until Next Monday,
